Pioneers - The first settler in Subukia - Mrs Vera Williamson - My husband came out under the Soldier Settler Scheme and reached the land he had selected, travelling in a Scotch cart drawn by oxen, on New Year's Day 1920. We were married in Mombasa in March 1923. There were only 3 other European women in Subukia then. Our farm was 40 miles from Nakuru, and it took an African 4 or 5 days to fetch the mail; he would also bring money from the bank with never a cent missing. …………… [more]
