Obituary in East African Standard 6 May 1935 He collapsed by the roadside in Whitehouse Road, Nairobi,  was taken to hospital by a passing motorist but was dead on arrival. He was born in Glasgow, educated at Marchfield Academy Helensburgh and Hillhead High School Glasgow. Was at Glasgow University and after a divinity course in Edinburgh was ordained to Horndean Church, Berwickshire in 1896. He was married the following year and in 1903 he and his wife went to New Zealand under the Colonial Committee of the church and for seven years he held the parishes of Warepa and Kahiku. He loved the classics and acted as honorary examiner for Greek and Hebrew at Otago University. Returned to Scotland in 1910 and was appointed ordained assistant to the parish of St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. He was called to the church of St Margaret’s in the parish of Barnhill, Broughty Ferry and remained there until 1920 when he came to St Andrews, Nairobi. He arrived in Nairobi on 31 March 1921. His duties took him to Kampala and Entebbe and he was always prepared to hold services for any Scottish community in outlying parts of the country when he was in the neighbourhood. He took an increasingly prominent and active part in the prolific work of the country. President last year of the Nairobi Association. He would he always claim to be a socialist in politics but in Kenya his sympathies were with settler policy and the establishment of sound British influence and Imperial traditions. He was a member of the Committee of the British Legion, first President of the Caledonian Society and a member of the committee, a member of the Education Committee, a member of the Macmillan Library Committee. For many years he was chairman of the board of Management of the YMCA. Was President of the footballer association and a founder of and first president of the Rugby Football Union of Kenya. During his early years he took an active part in refereeing rugby matches. He was a member of the Arab and African Athletic Associations and was keenly interested in the development of sport among Africans. Was a Freemason and a chaplain of Lodge Scotia. He had a profound regard for and knowledge of the history of Scotland and the country's literature and traditions.
