Permanent Way - 'By a stroke of good fortune the Company had been able to engage the services of Capt. F.D. Lugard, who later became Lord Lugard and the doyen of Colonial pro-consuls. Capt. Lugard had joined the Norfolk Regiment in 1878 and had fought in the Afghan War of 1879-80, the Sudan Campaign of 1884-5 and the Burma War of 1886-7. For his services in Burma Lugard had been appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. In May 1888, whilst on half-pay, he organised and commanded an expedition, on behalf of the British settlers in Nyasaland, against the Arab slave-traders around Lake Nyassa, where he was severely wounded. Lugard left Nyasaland in 1889 and, later in the year, was engaged by the Company with the consent of the War Office ......... (more pp. 31-)
Lloyd-Jones - 1890 - Capt. Lugard arrived at Kampala with a small force consisting of some 50 Sudanese, 50 Somalis, 1 worn-out machine-gun, which had been left at the coast by Stanley, and some 250 ill armed and ill disciplined Zanzibari porters.
