War Service: Grenadier Guards
General Information:
Richard Reeder (grandson) He joined the Grenadier Guards in 1898 and served in S. Africa 1899-1900. In 1904 he was seconded from the Grenadier Guards to train BEA Police stationed at Kisumu, then joined the Kenya Police. During the Kisii Patrol on 2 October 1905, Sgt Milton and some armed police were deployed in support of a Captain EV Jenkins and a political officer, together with one company of 3 KAR. The Kisii had apparently murdered some Kavirondo, described then as 'a lake people'. They then made an initial attack on the KAR force, not coming off too well - and then several days later, a force of 600 assaulted again, suffering similar casualties as in the first attack. This is the patrol which earned Sgt Milton his African General Service Medal, with clasp 'East Africa 1905'. He was also involved in the Nandi campaign also in 1905 and was apparently present when Captain Richard Meinertzhagen killed the Laibon of the Nandi. He was vehemently against this action and claimed it was unnecessary. He apparently did not like or trust Meinertzhagen nor his methods.
He purchased his first parcel of land at Dundori (on the edge of the Rift above Bahati/Lanet) in 1908, but he did not resign from the Police Force until 1913. His house at Dundori was built in 1912. He had two farms - one at Dundori, on the Eastern Great Rift Valley wall at 8,500 ft above sea level and the other in the Great Rift Valley at Milton’s Siding, Solai (named after her father, and still the Post Office address).
