Memoirs of Maurice B. Tennent - 1929 - 'Another newcomer to the district was a fellow called Hopley who had been doing transport contract work for Brooke Bond's new opened up Tea Estate in Kericho. When Brooke Bond & Co. came to undertake their own increased transport work themselves, Hopley fell out and bought a neighbouring Farm at Mile 5 on top of the hill above Lumbwa, known as 'Mombwa', and commenced farming there. ' 'Fred was a great driver and, together with a Mr 'Fairy' Engelbrecht, he entered the Nairobi to Cape Town motor race one year {1936} which they won in a Hudson terraplane. There were great celebrations.
