General Information:

He was first a chamois hunter, then a porter in 1890, before becoming a guide in 1894. He was hired in 1899 by Halford John Mackinder for an expedition of exploration in Africa and succeeded in the first ascent of Mount Kenya. In 1906, he returned to Africa with Louis-Amédée de Savoie, explored the Ruwenzori and climbed Mount Stanley. Returning to the Alps, and finally becoming a gamekeeper, he died on the slopes of the Dent de Jétoula, in the Mont Blanc massif in Italy.
