St Paul's Namirembe cemetery - Melville Raymond Portal, Capt. 81st Regt. Who died at Kampala when serving on the staff of his brother Sir Gerald Portal, 27 May 1893 aged 38. Born 9 Oct 1856

Chandler - educated at Eton and at Balliol, where he excelled at athletics. He then decided on a military career and attended Sandhurst, but due to an obscure army regulation he was too old (and therefore ineligible) for a regular commission and could only be commissioned into a colonial regiment. He became a second lieutenant in the First West India Regiment in 1881, and thereafter served in Ireland ….. And Sierra Leone, his first taste of Africa. After a severe bout with a tropical fever, he exchanged into the 81st foot, a regiment on the regular establishment. ……….. The sparse portrait of him in 'The British Mission to Uganda in 1893' is of a quiet, hard-working, dutiful man, deserving of a better fate than a swampy grave in a desolate outpost of Empire.
