Link 17 - George F. Henry - George was born in Nairobi and attended Parklands Primary School before going on to the Prince of Wales. He joined the Accounts Department under Harold Baldwin, Chief Accountant, and his first big job away from headquarters was on the North-South Rail Link (1948-51). Then he was called to the colours in the Kenya Regiment and went to Southern Rhodesia for 6 months' training. On his return to Kenya he was posted to the Northumberland Fusiliers as a "local expert". He also became a temporary District Officer in the Kikuyu Reserve, supporting the Administration. When discharged from the Regiment in 1956/57 he returned to the Accounts Dept. and worked in Coaching Audit, Nairobi.
In his early working life George was an enthusiastic motorist, and on one occasion he modified the exhaust system of his Vauxhall Velox so that the manipulation of a lever would create engine backfires, which were considered great for attracting the attention of the 'birds' while cruising by them. George married Mary, daughter of Col. Newall, Chairman of the Tanganyika Coffee Growers' Association, Moshi, at Westwood Park, Nairobi in December 1958. Two daughters Cynthia and Amanda, were born to Mary and George, and the next 14 years up to 1972 were spent at Dar Es Salaam and Nairobi. After retirement, George and his family moved to New Zealand in 1973 and settled in Howick. (lived in Pakuranga 1978)
