Info from granddaughter: He spent 2 months at Coombe Hospital, Dublin as an external clinical assistant. He sailed to East Africa in 1909 and was based in Mbale, Uganda. After leave in the UK he and his wife returned to Uganda in 1913 and were based in Entebbe. By 1917 they were in Mdabara before returning to the UK in 1919. In 1920 he was sent to Malaya, stationed at Tanjong Rambutan where he was in charge of the asylum. He did not enjoy Malaya and was able to return to East Africa at the end of 1920 and again was stationed at Entebbe.
In 1923 JAT was appointed director of Medical Services in Zanzibar where he remained until retirement in 1932, age 55.
In 1929 he was awarded an Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar -conferred upon him by His Highness the Sultan of Zanzibar in recognition of valuable services rendered. During WWII he went to work at Powick Hospital, Worcester, so as to relieve a younger doctor for the forces.
