Ancestry Alan Sorin, Laib's grandson wrote the following in a 2014 email; " You had asked the question as to why my Zadie [grandfather] moved his family to Nairobi. I did some research and found that Jews in Russia, because of their poor treatment, were considered for the Uganda Proposal of 1903 which was looking for a Jewish homeland in Africa. The story goes that my Zadie, Louis Sorin, was an officer in the Czarist Army. He was forced to serve as a Jew. The confusion that took place with the Russians at that time, gave him the freedom to escape with my Bubbie, Shana Mary and his 2 daughters, Esther and Freda. They just ran. My Aunt Esther spoke of being in Naples and I think they left for Africa from Bombay India. He worked as a carpenter and seemed to live well. Years later, when I was in the army, I met a native from Nairobi. He asked where my father was born. When I told him Parklands, Nairobi, he said "Oh, the Jewish Ghetto. There is still a congregation there.
