General Information:
On arrival in EA he was an Inspector of Police, promoted in 1908 to Asst. District Superintendent and in 1911 to Superintendent, subsequently becoming Asst. Commissioner. He served for more than 23 years in the Colony.

Police - Appointed an Inspector in the BEA Police in 1905 (Feb. 12th) - later Deputy Commissioner. .......... The Force lost another distinguished senior officer about the same time, J.C. Bentley, who had been Deputy Commissioner during the three years when Tyssen was Commissioner (1922-25). He joined the BEA Police as an Inspector on Feb. 12th 1905 and was promoted to Asst. District Superintendent on March 12th 1907. Once again promoted to Superintendent, he was made Asst. Commissioner in 1922. Like his friend Tyssen, Bentley served with the Force for 20 years before retiring on pension. His death occurred at Kiambu on Jan. 21st, 1939.
