General Information:
Advertiser - Friday April 9, 1909 - Obituary - We regret to announce the death of Mr John E. Cameron of Riversmeet, Fort Hall, at Nyeri on the 25th of March. Death was due to peritonitis, following perforation of the stomach, due to chronic ulceration. Dr Henderson of Fort Hall was in attendance upon Mr Cameron who was only in bed one day. He knew 7 hours before his death that his end was near. Mr Cameron was one of Glasgow's successful businessmen, but owing to depression in business and the favourable accounts of this country conveyed in official reports he came to East Africa in May 1907, with his oldest son, Eric. He took a lease of a 1,200 acre farm in Kenia Province but realising that, with our unsettled markets, returns would be slow he left his son to manage the farm while he came into Nairobi and for a short time filled a position in the Forest Department. He had only arrived at Nyeri to take up the appointment of Storekeeper for the Public Works Department when he was seized with the illness which culminated in his death. Not of a very robust constitution and having been afflicted with stomach complaint for many years nothing climatic can be blamed for his untimely end. Mr Cameron was well-known and much respected and was much younger than he looked, his age being but 44. Mr Cameron leaves a wife and family at home to whom we extend heartfelt sympathy in their sad bereavement. We are glad to say that the authorities in the Kenia Province have evinced considerable solicitude for the welfare of his young son who is now left alone among us.
