Nairobi Forest Road cemetery - Margaret Dewar McLeod Campbell-Gillies, British, age 85, died 22/11/40
Mary Potter: Ewan and Margaret Dewar (née McLeod) Gillies, with their children Anne, aged 3, Malcolm, aged 2 and Christina just a few months old, left Scotland for S. Africa in spring 1881. Very brave I think. Ewan and Margaret went on to have four more sons and two daughters. Malcolm was killed in 1901, in the Boer War. Ewan, Margaret and their four Sons moved to Kenya in 1924, but Ewan missed his band too much, (he was a Bagpipe Bandsman and Composer. 1st Pipe Major of S.A. Scottish Regt. Pretoria Regt. too. His pride and joy was the Juvenile Pipe Band), so returned to Pretoria, where he died 1 March 1927, still known as Ewan Gillies. Margaret visited him during those last years. When the Family moved to Kenya, they changed their surname to Campbell-Gillies.
