Mombasa from Durban as 'Distressed British Subject' given job as overseer in Conservancy instead of a native so he could buy food Oct/Nov 1898; employed as Special Constable to escort Capt. F.S. Dugmore from Machakos to Mombasa arr. Mombasa 19/11/1898; while on escort duty suffered an attack of 'Loco ataxy' on recovering drew his pay & dep. Mombasa for the south by dhow; tried unsuccessfully to obtain employment with ZP, ill at Zanzibar late 1898; sent south from Zanzibar to Fort Salisbury at British Government expense on surety of £30 lodged by father with FO in London Jan 1899.
S. African death cert. was a miner. Died of pneumonia
