Mervyn Maciel: Elsie worked periodically in the 1970’s and 80’s alongside raising her children. Whilst she didn’t have a ‘career’ as such, she was extremely talented and could ‘turn her hand’ to a variety of skills with incredible results. On moving to London, Elsie developed a love of ceramics and regularly attended night classes, producing beautiful handbuilt and thrown pieces, some of which were included in local exhibitions. Elsie was an accomplished cook and was the first Goan to publish her “Goan Cookery Book’ in the U.K. in 1983 (the book was successfully reprinted 3 times and received rave reviews). Elsie was also a talented seamstress, knitter and gardener.
