Carman - Dr. J.H. Sequeira of the London Hospital who had been a pioneer in the fields of radiology and the Finsen light treatment of tuberculosis of the skin. He was in charge of the Department of Dermatology at the London, but like Dr. Jex-Blake had been advised for health reasons to go and live in a more genial climate. He chose to come to Kenya because his adopted son had a farm at Makuyu and he went there to live, but he came regularly to Nairobi where he soon built up a consulting practice.

Dr. Sequeira came of a long and uninterrupted line of medical men and he was very proud of the fact. An ancestor of his was Court Physician to the King of Portugal who lent him to King Charles II. The merry monarch took such a liking to the doctor that he persuaded him, doubtless with much fine gold, to stay in England. The medical tradition was handed down from father to son for two-an-a half centuries, but it came alas to an end with J.H. Sequeira. When he was doing his work on radiology it had not yet been appreciated how dangerous this could be and he himself told me that he was sure that he had sterilized himself. In a country where yaws, syphilis, leprosy and many tropical skin conditions were common, a dermatologist of international repute was a godsend and Sequeira was soon working in close collaboration with the DMS.
