General Information:
Later to Kakamega Goldfields with the Johnson and Starns Mill at Asembo - stone crushing and stamp mills. Then to a sawmill at Burnt Forest, Njoro. Then in 1936 to Jimmy Beeston's sawmill at Njoro to make pencil slats. In 1946 to Bamburi Holiday Beach Hotel at Bamburi on the Coast, followed by Manager of the EA Tourist Travel Association, Coastal Branch, at an office situated in Mombasa Harbour from 1953-63.
Born on Queen Victoria's 70th Birthday, and always very proud of this. Both grandfathers, his father, his uncles and husbands of his aunts all Royal Navy or Royal Marines. In 1906 he left the Bluecoat School, into the Royal Navy, and joined his first ship, the 'Prince of Wales' of the Mediterranean Fleet, as a 'Snottie'. He resigned from the Royal Navy in 1913, and settled in Cape Town, SA. He joined Enslin Commando in 1914, and went up to Keetmanshoop in SW Africa. He then joined the 71st Siege Battery, attached to the Royal Garrison Artillery, and won the MM in France. He was wounded and gassed, and discharged in early 1919. Source: Roy Douglas Dewar
