Cuckoo - Formerly of the CID of the Johannesburg Police. He was an expert on fingerprints, and proved invaluable. His appointment was a secret one, known only to Major Foran and the Inspector General of Police.

Police - In 1907 authority had been secured to engage C.W. Patrick as a temporary Inspector at Nairobi to take charge of an embryo Finger Print Department. He had been doing this work with the CID of the Johannesburg Police, and was an expert. But his appointment was shortly afterwards ended on the score that Finger Print work had not yet become necessary. Two years later, however, a Finger Print Bureau was started in earnest.
