General Information:
During the first part of their marriage [Bill & Sophia] they lived in a cottage in the grounds of the club. Later they also had a farm at Limuru, run in partnership with Col. Horace Case. This was a property purchased from a Mr & Mrs Gilpin in the 1930s. At the time of his marriage to Sophia, Bill was a widower with two small sons. The eldest, John, worked for Stanvac and Mobiloil before emigrating to Australia in 1965. Dennis, the younger brother, was at various times Mine Host at Brackenhurst Country Club, The Stag's Head at Nakuru and Kampala Club. He now lives in Johannesburg. Bill and Sophia also had a daughter Ann, whose early claim to fame was becoming Head Girl at Limuru School in the mid 1940s. Source: Mrs C. Hart

Mills - Muthaiga Country Club 1939 - Capt. Nigel Graham was due to retire and it was agreed that Mr W.J. Suffield should, as a war-time measure, take over as Secretary of the Muthaiga Country Club in addition to his other duties. He was in fact to be Club Secretary for the next 20 years.
Mills - 1940 - At this time Mr W.J. Suffield, who had been doing the work of Secretary of the Muthaiga Golf Club as well as the country club, was showing signs of fatigue. It was agreed that he should resign as Golf Club Secretary, and it was hoped that Club would appoint an honorary secretary.
Mills - In March [1949] the hard work of W.J. Suffield, the secretary from 1939 to date, was recognised by the committee, who awarded him a sum of £500 as a war bonus. This doed not now seem a large sum for 6 years of very hard work, but as the Committee at the same meeting decided to seek an assistant secretary at £25 per month plus his keep, it must be looked at in the light of the purchasing power of money in 1946.
