Nellie - (during WW1) - 'all Nellie's neighbours on the ridge had gone save one, Kichanga. Tuberculosis had been his reason for coming to Africa. Like many others, he had been advised that the dry, sunlit climate of the African Highlands might cure him. So it did, but the process was not complete and at this stage he was not passed fit for active service. (He was later on.) So he remained behind, working 12 hours a day and more to look after several of his neighbours' farms as well as his own.
