Nellie - 1947 - 'All over the Uasin Gishu plateau now are signposts 'Manchester' - gives the plateau quite an industrial tang. After tea [Lunch with Cecil Hoey] we went up to the Manchester abode. It is quite fantastic. The Duchess has 53 dresses still not unpacked - she simply hasn't time between gins. They are importing a silver mantlepiece weighing 5 tons, and 8000 books - not that they have time for reading. Her drawing room is virginal white, with tables all glass or silver chrome. Beautiful flower arrangements, straight Constance Spry, everything defoliated so that even quite heavy sprays of honeysuckle look slender. There is a small boy with a double chin, rolls of fat and curly locks; the tutor took to drink so no one has any education.'
