General Information:
Bwana - PC Turkana in 1934 - a man of great experience and a qualified geologist. At one time served in the famous Corps of Guides on the NW Frontier. One of the old school of 'pukka sahibs'. An irreverent junior has related that on one occasion he found himself on the wrong side of a flooded river which it was necessary to cross. The safest way to cross a flooded river is to take everything off, thus lessening the drag of encumbering clothing, but Champion, a stickler for convention, was dressed in breeches, riding boots and jacket, and it was only after much persuasion that he consented to discard these. Nothing, not even the fear of drowning, would make him part with his shirt and helmet. Eventually the crossing was accomplished with the help of a naked Turkana and the loss of the helmet, and Champion, much embarrassed, landed safe on the opposite bank, busily trying to control his flapping shirt tails.
