General Information:
Ian Campbell Clause - Gerald Southey who had been badly hurt in a horse race in Nairobi in about 1923. He was on crutches latterly and callipers.
Cran - Gerald and Josephine Southey owned a small farm at Turi, called Cheviot Ltd. Here, at an altitude of over 8,000 feet, they grew pyrethrum, raised Ayrshire cattle and ran a small flock of sheep for mutton and wool. Gerald was crippled and as a result the bulk of the farm work fell onto Josephine's shoulders. Their wooden house was modestly furnished and it was evident that they had little money to spare for personal luxuries. They were, however, the most hospitable of people and a visit to the farm never passed without my receiving an invitation to partake of some home baking, fruit from their garden or, depending on the time of day, lunch or dinner. ………. Josephine Southey ……. was a small, homely, friendly person, who reminded me of a contented, preoccupied little bird, such as a thrush or a robin, hopping through life, doing this and that, helping people and harming no-one.
Red 25 also has G. Southey, Hoey's Bridge
