Eldoret - 1967 - recently left Kenya with his wife and family told me that his father, H.P. Van Heerden, was among the first trek up here from SA. When Theo was only 9 years old, his father handed him a .303 rifle with one round only to shoot hartebeest - the Plateau was teeming with them. He tried to stalk fairly close to one, and fired, hitting one in the head. It was stunned, and the African with him helped him to drag it along by the horns after finishing it off. After going about half a mile they were able to load the animal on to the scotch cart and take it triumphantly home.
