General Information:
Ngata farm had for a long time 3,000 cattle, 3,000 sheep and 3,000 acres under cultivation (not because 3 was a lucky number but it just happened to work out that way!). He worked as Lord Egerton's Agent for some ten years before Lord Egerton died in 1958. He lived in retirement at 'Canti Ha', Njoro.
Last Chance - another "character" in the Njoro district. He runs a 12000 acre farm for Lord Egerton of Tatton and a 1200 acre one for himself, on which he is running 500 head of cattle with 500 acres under cultivation, a remarkable example of good farming in this volcanic valley. .......... He is slightly deaf; a red-faced, hearty man, who thinks he is whispering to you sometimes at cocktail parties (sundowners as they call them). And so one evening he told me how he had been back in London, where, much to his annoyance, he had to go into hospital to have an operation for piles: "A mangy-looking sort of person came in to shave my backside in the morning. He had an old-fashioned razor. I said to him, 'Do you know how to use that thing?' He said: 'I've been shaving people, sir, for just your operation, for over 25 years.' I said: 'Shaving other people's bottoms for 25 years! My God! What a profession!'" ............ Coltart has been on that spot for 35 years. (more pp.62-63)
Nellie - 1953 - 'Hugh Coltart had a store with a thousand bags of barley burnt down last night ..…..'
Golf - President of Njoro Golf Club in 1950/51. Captain of Njoro Golf Club in 1935 and 1939-45
KAD 1922 - Committee Member, Njoro Sports Club
Curtis - p. 97 - 'Kipkebe' by Agnes Shaw - 'Among the bachelors who came most frequently to our house was Hugh Coltart, who ran Lord Egerton's home farm for many years and became Bwana Lordy's right-hand man. Out of gratitude Lord Egerton when he died left him all his Kenya estate, which I believe consisted of a large parcel of land, and equally large overdraft and a castle which he had built for himself, but seldom occupied, at Njoro. For all his ventures and many foreign investments Lord Egerton used to say that the only one which really paid was a small shop in Vancouver run by a Chinese. Perhaps this was because Lord Egerton, himself a bachelor, was more of a philanthropist than a businessman, his especial interest being the training and welfare of young men, as Egerton Agricultural College bears witness. He had a natural and ready wit, very deaf even when young.
