Verandah - A soldier in India - Captain - with no private means. After WW1, in 1923, he returned to S. Africa where he had been expelled from his parents' Quaker fold because he had enlisted for the War. His wife had been born and brought up in India - her father was a doctor in the Indian Medical Service. His farm in S. Africa failed and he took a job with 'African Explosives & Industries' and they sent him to Kenya.
