General Information:
Bendel - He came to Kenya in 1926 and bought some ponies which he used for polo and hunting at Molo. In those days there were special races for Somali ponies and George, in partnership with his brother, bought a pony called Tim for about £15. They won a lot of races with Tim including the Kenya Police Cup and took it in turns to ride him. George's success of Tim led to other rides and he was soon riding quite frequently as an amateur against professional jockeys. In 1930 he won the Kenya Grand National on a horse called Tangerine IV and the following year won the Kenya Derby on Barrator, owned by Lord Howard de Walden. In 1930, also, George started training in a very small way and carried on with a few horses until the war. He trained his first winner, a horse called Loos in 1931. In 1935 George rode the filly Joyous Guard to win the St. Leger. After the war he increased his stable to about 15 horses and has turned out over 700 winners since he started. These include 5 Derby winners, King Midas, which won 12 races in a row, Golden Shower, Reveller, Valkyrie and of course, Belmo ........... he has been based at Naivasha since 1970. (more)
