Royal Field Artillery. On 26 Sept displayed conspicuous bravery with his gun in the infantry firing line, bringing it out of its emplacement to meet the enemy's infantry attack. Web - Obit. - After the 1914-18 war, in the course of which he won the DSO, he retired from the Army and entered the Kenya Administration. In 1925 he became private secretary and ADC to the Governor, Sir Edward Denham. He was then district commissioner of Kakamega for 7 years and was there during the gold rush, moving later to Kiambu district. During the war of 1939-45 he was Director of Pioneers and Labour, EA Command, and after the war was first commissioner of the African Land Utilization and Settlement Board. He retired in 1950. He married in 1926 Betty, daughter of Mrs A.H. Etherington. After his retirement he and his wife lived for some years in Berkshire, but they returned this year [1949] to Kenya, where their 3 daughters are living.
Web - WW1 - His mother received 3 War Office telegrams in one day; the first, that he was killed; the second, that he was wounded; the third, that he was in a London hospital. In 1917 he was again severely wounded and lost his left leg. Nothing daunted, he joined the Kenya Administration, making his official journeys accompanied by a long black box filled with artificial legs. Always an athlete he still played tennis. ……… (more)

Midday Sun - (1933) - Kakamega Gold Fields - 'the DC, a grey haired, elderly man called Colonel Anderson, with one leg stiffened by a war wound. He was coping in a most unruffled manner with the unexpected situations that had sprung at him, situations for which no previous experience can have prepared him.'
EA & Rhodesia - 18/6/59 - Colonel E.L. Brooke Anderson, CBE, DSO, who died at the week-end in Nairobi at the age of 69, entered the Colonial Service in Kenya after the 1914-18 war. After being private secretary to an Acting Governor, Sir Edward Denham, he was DC in Kakamega during the gold rush. During the last war he was Director of Pioneers and Labour in East Africa Command. He retired in 1950 and came to live in England, but went back to Kenya some months ago.
