Coast Causerie - Story of the fibre plantation in Kenya
Playne - Although there is every prospect for the fibre industry in BEA, yet the question of labour is a most serious one. Indentured labour is said to be an absolute necessity, native being far too uncertain, and on this account, at the present time, the Cullinan works are being run at a loss. The Cullinan fibre concession is at Darajni River, about 9 miles from Masongaleni railway station. The concession is 100 square miles in extent, and is managed by Mr H.G. Cullinan. Four Europeans and about 250 natives are employed, although some 800 are required. The syndicate commenced operations in 1907. ............ Mr Cullinan, who came to BEA from South Africa, is interested in this concern with his brother, Mr T. Cullinan, the finder of the famous diamond and thoroughly believes in the future of the industry.

Sue Rye - Mary Rayne, my father's (Harry) sister, born 1876, apparently came to Africa in 1903 or 4 to look for Harry. I think it was she who ran Rayne's Masonic Hotel in Nairobi, which sounds a bit of a den. She married Harry Cullinan (Henry Gould Cullinan) and their granddaughter is Jeanne Mathews, married to Terry Mathews, living in Nairobi now [2008].
