Somerset County Gazette - Article - Jan. 1st 1999 - Tributes were paid to popular Taunton garage owner Willie Young this week. The 67 year old was found dead in a car at his business in South Street on Christmas Eve. A post mortem examination has shown he died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Police say they are not treating his death as suspicious. …. His widow Tessa, a local journalist for many years, is currently a columnist with the County Gazette. The couple have four sons Byron, 38, Conway, 37, Will, 34 and Joel 29 and six grandchildren. Mr Young was born in Kenya and had five brothers and two sisters. He fought in the Kenya Regiment during the violent Mau Mau rebellion, and represented Kenya at hockey, golf and rugby. A keen sportsman he drove in the East African Safari Rally for the Citroen works team. Mr Young moved to England and settled in Taunton with his wife and sons in 1968. He ran the Wellington Road Service Station before moving to his own premises in South Street. He was a leading light in the Somerset ratepayers protest of the seventies. He was a member of the Taunton Motor Sports Club and a member of the Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club, and was also a qualified pilot who owned his own plane. Tessa Young said: "the whole family is dumbfounded and in deep shock. Willie was a big man in every sense of the word and was much loved by us and his many friends. … "
