General Information:

Uganda Journal - Vol 26, p. 138 - qualified in medicine at the universities in Edinburgh and Marburg, Germany. He returned to England in 1879. Later he kept up a correspomndence with Emin and took a prominent part in the organization of the expedition which set out for his relief in 1887. He was the first Englishman to look upon both Lakes Albert and Victoria. Went to reside in New Zealand in 1914. Joint author with C.T. Wilson of 'Uganda and the Egyptian Soudan' (1880) and also wrote many articles on Uganda and on tropical diseases.

CMS 1878 - Age 25. Of Beeston, Notts. Medical Student. 1878, May 8 to Nyanza Mission, one of the party of 4 sent out via the Nile on receipt of the intelligence of the murder of George Shergold-Smith and Thomas O'Neill. Reached Uganda, Feb 1879. Left May 17 for England, accompanying the Waganda envoys; 1880 June 23 with the envoys to Zanzibar; then at Frere Town; 1880 Oct. 9 to England and 1881, Aug 8 resigned. Abs. 2 years 3 months, Service 3 years 3 months. FRGS. Died 1926 Dec 28 in New Zealand
