General Information:
Dusty - ..... an aged warrior, 1914-18 vintage .... at first gave the impression of being the roughest of rough diamonds. There are many people who when sober 'speak refined', and when drunk do not. Joe when sober spoke with a vile Australian accent and was apt to introduce himself, to anyone, as 'Captain F.....g Spooner, MC' When drunk he spoke like an English gentleman, which he was. He had been expelled from school for refusing to be beaten by a coloured prefect; he had been commissioned into the Army in 1912; had served two hair-raising years as Carton de Wiart's ADC, acquiring innumerable wounds in the process. Invalided out, he had worked as a cattleman in the Australian outback. He knew everything there was to know about beef cattle, and had forgotten more than I ever knew about horses.
