Ord - 'I had written to Dr Harry Lunn at Kipkarren. He had a farm and was moving to a Mission School in the Rift Valley. His reply brought with it the offer of a job as farm manager at Kipkarren, near Eldoret. …….. Hilda Lunn was a medical doctor and Harry a Doctor of Divinity. I was willing to try farm managing and wrote back accordingly.

He was working on a coffee estate in Thika at the time he bought 'Laboret' in 1926 from Laurie Walker, who had acquired it under the soldier/settler scheme.
